Family of shooting victim wants answers

"It’s very hard… There’s so much I can say about him, but it’s just hard," says Kalani Elderts, the uncle of Kollin Elderts.

Kollin’s family was brought to tears with so many unanswered questions. They want to know why their nephew and cousin was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Waikiki.

"Our family is broken everybody is heartbroken. Kollin was good, he was one of the good ones you wanted to be around Kollin because he made you smile, he made you feel loved and accepted there’s nothing he wouldn’t have done for you and he didn’t deserve this," says Sarah Kanuha, Kollin’s cousin.

Police say 23 year-old Kollin was with a group inside the McDonalds on Kuhio Avenue. Witnesses tell KHON2 Kollin appeared to have been drinking and calling people derogatory names. Police say he got into an altercation with Christopher Deedy, an off-duty U.S. State Department special agent, and was shot.

"A Federal Agent, why?," asks Kanuha. "What would give him the right to do that to somebody in public you know."

"I’m angry and my heart is hurting so bad. He was loved by all, I know he didn’t do anything for that man to shoot him, I know he didn’t, I know him," says Kollin’s Aunt Victoria Elderts.

Kollin was shot once in the chest and taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died. Police say Kollin and Special agent Deedy did not know each other prior to the shooting.

"We don’t know the full story, but we want to know why because it’s just nothing should happen like that," says Elderts.

"All we know what happened was just wrong, and it’s just hard to accept," says Kanuha.

Kollin was a graduate of Kalaheo highschool and one of seven brothers.

"he always lived his life to make people laugh, happy and be happy all the time," says Elderts. "he was loved by many, will be missed by many."

Special Agent Christopher Deedy was arrested for Murder and remains in police custody, he has not been charged.
