HONOLULU (AP) – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comments on a draft economic analysis of critical habitat it’s proposing for 124 species on Oahu.
The agency said Wednesday it will accept comments through May 14.
The agency is proposing to create critical habitat for 20 plants and three Hawaiian damselfies. It also wants revise existing critical habitat for dozens of other species.
The proposals aim to protect endangered species by restoring health to the broad ecosystems they inhabit.
This is the second time the agency has used this approach after an earlier effort on Kauai.
Before, the service tried to protect species by adopting separate plans to revive their respective habitats.
This led to disjointed and overlapping efforts.
