Final mass held before trip to Vatican

Two weeks and counting till the Blessed Marianne Cope officially becomes a saint.

The final mass before people depart on their journey to the Vatican was held on Molokai.

The mass was held this morning at St. Philomena Catholic Church.

Many of the people making the journey to the vatican also went there for Saint Damien’s canonization ceremony three years ago.

"That a sister of St. Francis is to be declared a saint for the global community not only for Hawaii but throughout the world as one who served with the patients who were shunned by others," said Sister Rose Ahuna, Sisters of St. Francis. "It’s a privilege for us to still be here and be a part of her legacy."

"Just to think about that a small place like Kalaupapa or an island small like ours Molokai. It’s the saints from Molokai," shared Boogie Kahilihiwa.

Mother Marianne cared for Hansen’s disease patients in Kalaupapa for 30 years and succeeded Saint Damien.

The canonization ceremony takes place on Oct. 21.
