What a day it’s been, especially for folks in East Oahu, some of whom are dealing with major flooding.
Gina Brewer never expected this when she moved into a home on Wailupe Place last June.
"Went and bought myself some boots at City Mill, but it’s even too deep. Doesn’t even matter. Still got inside those," said Gina Brewer.
She woke up to flooding.
"And then between 7am and 11am is when it really the water rose a whole lot," said Gina Brewer.
Firefighters have been here all day, but they can only do so much.
Luckily Gina’s home is elevated.
"About the top of the first step is as far as it has gotten," said Gina Brewer.
But some of her neighbors aren’t so lucky.
"I’m just hoping it goes down soon, but I don’t know. It’s not looking promising," said Gina Brewer.
Kaimuki resident Tracy Byrnes is also hoping the water goes down soon.
"Just horrible. It’s just been flooding off and on, off and on. Jjust when you get it kind of under control it floods again," said Tracy Byrnes.
Her home on 22nd Avenue didn’t get flooded, but it’s a different story for her neighbor Daryl Lee.
"This whole place was flooded like three to four inches deep," said Daryl Lee.
He spent the day pumping out the water, and drying out the room.
And his yard looks more like a lake.
"In the back it was like up to my knees earlier. We don’t got no drain here, so it’s like it builds up," said Daryl Lee.
In Waikiki, behind Discovery Bay Center, it isn’t a lack of a drain that’s causing this mess, but rather a drain that doesn’t work properly, says the building’s General Manager Chris Herndon.
"Every time we have heavy rains the streets flood," said Chris Herndon.
And over on Diamond Head Road, City crews were busy cleaning up the mess.
The road was closed at Makalei Place.
"We’re just cleaning out this drainage canal that goes into, empties out into the ditch right here. It was overflowing with debris that washed down from the upper street," said Dennis Silva, Storm Drain Crew Leader.
Kalanianaole Highway at Lunalilo Home Road was also closed because of debris on the road.
And in this case, it included not only mud, but also large boulders.
If there’s a silver lining in these storm clouds, it would have to be these rare waterfalls.on Koko Head, and also on Diamond Head — something you don’t get to see very often.
As far as the road closures in East Oahu, Diamond Head Road is back open again.
But Kalanianaole Highway is still closed. Officials say it should be back open within a few hours.
