HONOLULU (AP) – Former Honolulu Councilman Rod Tam is expected to be sentenced on charges of theft and ethics violations.
Tam pleaded no contest in June to eight charges of misdemeanor campaign spending violations.
Last November, he pleaded guilty to 26 counts of theft and falsifying documents.
Prosecutors say he spent campaign funds for personal use, filed a false restaurant receipt and failed to report campaign contributions until well past the reporting deadline.
Tam is eligible for a deferral because he does not have a criminal record. Deputy Attorney General Lori Wada has said she’ll oppose a deferral and ask that he serve jail time.
Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
