Gov. Abercrombie releases 90-day homeless plan

HONOLULU (AP) – Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s administration is unveiling a new 90-day plan to tackle homelessness in Hawaii.

The plan focuses on encouraging people living on the streets to move into shelters or housing.

It also attempts to move the homeless from parks and sidewalks by convincing service providers to stop feeding them there.

The plan was announced Tuesday and takes effect immediately.

Abercrombie’s homelessness coordinator, Marc Alexander, said he hopes to make a noticeable difference over the three months through Aug. 17.

Other steps combating homelessness include offering psychiatric services and developing outreach teams to help people in need.

Abercrombie says eliminating homelessness is one of his top priorities.
