A green sea turtle that had been living with an eight pound tumor is back in the water, and tumor free.
The non-profit group Ocean Defenders Hawaii says the turtle was spotted about eight months ago in the Wailea area.
They named him heartbreak, monitored him, and got the attention of NOAA officials.
NOAA says the tumor was affecting its ability to eat, and survive in the wild.
"Heartbreak was supposed to be euthanized, but they found out that the tumor wasn’t bad in his organs so they gave him a second chance. Heartbreak is back home on Maui and we’re so happy and blessed," said Oriana Kalama, of Ocean Defenders Hawaii.
NOAA will keep monitoring the turtle, and is optimistic about his recovery.
