Guillermo stops strengthening for now, forecast track shifts north

While Hurricane Guillermo continues to move rapidly to the west-northwest, forecasters say it has not strengthened over the past several hours, and is not expected to reach Category 3 strength as previously thought.

However there may be some strengthening tonight and Saturday.

Guillermo is expected to weaken to tropical storm status as it nears the islands, bringing wet weather starting late Tuesday and lasting through early Friday. Trades will most likely be disrupted.

At this point, we’re still too far out to know for sure how strong the winds will be, whether or not the storm will actually hit the islands or how close it will pass.

The future proximity of the storm will be a factor on what wind speeds the islands may experience next week.

At 800 PM PDT (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Guillermo was located near latitude 13.2 North, longitude 136.1 West. Guillermo is moving toward the west-northwest near 20 mph (31 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue tonight with a gradual decrease in forward speed on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts. Guillermo has not strengthened during the past several hours. However, some strengthening is possible tonight and Saturday. Weakening is expected to begin on Sunday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km).

Hurricane Hunters are expected to fly through the storm Sunday.

It’s standard procedure for the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron of the Air Force Reserve to fly into storms threatening any part of the U.S. or one of its territories.

Crews drop special sensors known as dropsondes into the storm to measure wind speeds, pressure and temperature.
