The Honolulu program of waste to energy recovery, or H-POWER is expanding.
The city unveiled the waster center’s third and newest boiler on Tuesday.
The added boiler is capable of burning 300,000 tons of mass a year.
H-power will now be able to combust 900,000 tons of Honolulu’s non-recyclable household trash annually and use that power 65,000 Oahu homes.
"This may raise our recycling rate or our recovery rate up to about 80 percent," said Mayor Peter Carlisle. "So that is outstanding news. And that will put us in the top of the country – one of the top people who have succeeded in doing that."
The new boiler is part of an $302 million expansion project started in 2009.
