Haleiwa Farmers Market ordered to shut down

The State has ordered the Haleiwa Farmers Market to shut down.

The market, located at the end of Joseph P. Leong Highway, opened in 2009.

The Department of Transportation says the market was never charged rent.

However, during negotiations for a long term lease officials learned the site is considered part of the highway.

The state says its hands are tied due to liability issues.

About 80 or 90 vendors, and 2,300 customers weekly, are affected by the shutdown.
