Hana takes brunt of storm on Maui

A flash flood warning is in effect for maui county until 12:15 friday afternoon.

On Maui, the county says it appears that Hana highway took the brunt of the storm overnight. The county reports water flowing over the bridges, trees down, landslides, downed power lines. The Hana highway remains closed between mile marker 7 and Hana town.

Also, all customers in Hana have had their power restored as of 9:03 am. Approximately 400 customers were affected by the outage that appears to have been the result of severe storm conditions in the area.

The department of water supply is recommending customers in the central and south maui areas boil water before consumption due to possible contamination from flooding.

Affected areas include Kahului, Wailuku, Paia, Spreckelsville, Waihee, Waikapu, Puunene, Kihei, Wailea, Makena, and Maalaea. At this time, there are no water quality violations; the advisory is a precautionary measure for public health and safety purposes. Customers should boil water at a rapid boil for three minutes or more prior to consumption or use, or use bottled water.

DWS personnel are out in the water system flushing waterlines to ensure clean water and laboratory personnel will take samples to verify water quality later Friday.

Customers are asked to call the DWS service line (270-7633) only if a water emergency occurs.
