Hanauma Bay reopens Friday

UPDATE: The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will reopen Friday after being partially closed on Thursday and completely closed on Wednesday following damage by heavy rains.

Hanauma Bay’s beach area was closed Thursday, but its upper viewing area and parking lot were opened.

City workers addressed hazardous conditions by moving sand Wednesday and Thursday to restore areas that were damaged.

Hanauma Bay was closed today because of the bad weather.

City officials say non-stop rain created waterfalls around the bay and dug deep trenches in the sand.

Some of the trenches measured four-feet-deep and eight-feet-wide.

The storm also pushed debris into the bay.

Hanauma Bay will open Thursday but the beach area will remain closed while city workers continue to repair damage. The upper viewing area and parking lot will be open to the public.

City golf courses at Ala Wai, Ewa Villages and West Loch remained closed Wednesday, but are expected to reopen Thursday if conditions permit.
