Hawaii changes renewable energy tax credit

HONOLULU (AP) – Hawaii’s Department of Taxation is issuing new rules for the renewable energy tax credits that have spurred more residents to install solar panels.

The department says it’s doing so to provide clarity to taxpayers.

But environmentalists and renewable energy advocates say the new rule jeopardizes the state’s progress in moving away from imported fossil fuels.

The Sierra Club and Earthjustice say the rule change would cut the tax credit by 50 percent. Sierra Club Hawaii Director Robert Harris says such a "sudden, extreme" reduction in the tax credit is misguided.

The department said Friday it acted to provide a consistent, uniform and fair application of the tax credit law while supporting reduced fossil fuel use.

The new rules will apply to systems installed and placed into service from Jan. 1.
