Hawaii County Clerk asks for investigation into Office of Elections

Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi is asking the Governor for an independent investigation into voting irregularities on the Big Island.

Kawauchi is testifying before a special meeting of the Hawaii County Council this morning. She has been criticized for her handling of the Primary Election, including delays in opening the polls.

Kawauchi is asking the Governor not only for an independent investigation into the Office of Elections. And she will ask the governor if the Lieutenant Governor’s office can take over control of the November General Election. That’s who had control of elections until lawmakers made a change in 1995.

Kawauchi has been criticized for poor planning and leadership. She blames the Office of Elections for a lack of communication, and taking materials that would help her investigate what went wrong.

KHON2′s Gina Mangieri is on the Big Island today and will have a full report on Kawauchi’s testimony, and reaction to her requests, tonight on the KHON2 News at 5, 6, and 10.
