Hawaii meetings see more international attendees

HONOLULU (AP) – International attendance is increasing for meetings held at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Convention center officials said Monday outreach efforts to capitalize on the state as a central meeting point between North America and Asia has resulted in an increase in global registration at the largest meetings held in Hawaii.

International attendees made up 37 percent of participants in April’s American Academy of Neurology meeting. Participation doubled from targeted countries including Australia and China.

More than 39 percent who attended May’s American Psychiatric Association meeting traveled from outside the United States.

Convention center General Manager Joe Davis says international outreach, combined with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum to be held in Hawaii in November, solidifies the state as a convenient business location.
