Hawaiian Airlines makes history for going green

It’s a tune up for your engine. In this case it’s a really large engine on a Hawaiian Airlines jet.

That power wash has led to a more efficient fleet, and one emitting less CO2, or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Because of that lessened carbon footprint, Hawaiian Airlines has made history.

It’s the first airline in the world to earn carbon credits. "As a result of it we have been flying cleaner and more fuel efficiently everyday. It is one part of a multi-faceted effort that we have to reduce our fuel burn and to reduce our carbon footprint," said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines President and Chief Executive Officer.

Hawaiian has teamed with Pratt-Whitney, which has invented the eco-power engine washing system. According to Hawaiian Airlines the new wash not only helps keep the environment cleaner, but it saves the company about a $1 million a year in fuel costs.

But the airline says it’s not just a business decision, it has to do with where Hawaiian calls home. "Nowhere is this more obvious a need than here in these beautiful islands, whose environment is truly something out of this world, Dunkerley said at a press conference at Honolulu Airport.

The system is in use in Los Angeles and Oakland, and only used on Mainland and International flights.

Hawaiian and Pratt-Whitney started their working relationship back in 2005, and recently signed another five year contract.
