(HONOLULU) — Hawaiian Electric Company will be making improvements to transmission structures in the Koolau Mountains behind Manoa, St. Louis Heights and Palolo. The work is part of the company’s effort to modernize Oahu’s electric system and improve service reliability to the Honolulu area.
The project involves replacing six existing aluminum transmission structures with upgraded steel structures. These structures support lines which carry power across the mountains.
The work will require contractors for Hawaiian Electric to use helicopters to airlift work crews and equipment. The work is scheduled to run through October.
Flights will take place Monday through Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Weather and other flight conditions permitting, Saturday flights will be limited to the beginning and end of the work day.
Helicopters are needed for this work because of the remote location of the work sites, the difficult terrain, and the desire to minimize the impact to nearby vegetation. The helicopters will be used throughout the project to transport workers, construction materials and equipment to and from the work sites, and to assist crews with the utility work.
"We know helicopter work can be disruptive, so we want to apologize to the public for any inconvenience. These upgrades will help make the electric system stronger and improve service for our customers," said Darren Pai, Hawaiian Electric spokesman.
In compliance with FAA regulations and Hawaiian Electric’s safety practices, the helicopters will not fly over residential or populated areas while carrying loads.
