Heavy rain hit the Kona side of the Big Island Friday afternoon, the start of what could be a wet Mother’s Day weekend for parts of our state.
The downpour caused flooding at the Royal Kona Resort.
A flash flood warning was in effect for the Big Island much of the afternoon.
"Flooding in our beach lagoon areas that really kind of overtook the area. We also had flooding in our front entry. Water was as high as wheel wells so as you can imagine that is pretty intense for Kailua-Kona," said Elizabeth Bell of Hawaiian Hotels & Resort.
"Man it was a big downpour. I’ve been coming out here for I would say 10 years now and I’ve never seen it rain as heavy as it did today," said Kyle Hensley, a visitor from California.
Friday’s storm over the Big Island also brought thunder and lightning.
According to the rain gauge in Kealakekua, about three inches of rain fell in a three hour period.
Due to the heavy showers the Royal Kona Resort had to move an outdoor concert by the group "Toad the Wet Sprocket" indoors.
