Heavy rains, possible thunderstorms for eastern half of the state

A low pressure system in the upper atmosphere is keeping heavy rains and possible thunderstorms near Maui and the Big Island tonight.

The system is expected to move east Sunday, and drier weather will fill in west to east across the state.

More typical tradewind showers are likely windward and mauka.

Winds are out of the northeast between 15 and 25 miles per hour, keeping the choppy surf on the east shores between 7 to 10 feet.  A high surf advisory is in effect for the east shores of all islands until 6 p.m. Sunday.

Surf on the north will be 2 to 4 feet, west 1 to 2 feet, and south flat to 2 feet.

A small craft advisory is in effect for all coastal waters across the state.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Big Island Summits.  Snow and freezing rain is possible.
