HONOLULU (AP) – A Hilo-based National Guard helicopter unit originally due to deploy to Iraq is going to Kuwait instead.
The Hawaii National Guard said Monday the mission of Company C, 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment has changed because the U.S. military is drawing down its presence in Iraq.
The unit’s roughly 50 soldiers will still perform general aviation support, but from Kuwait.
The soldiers have already left Fort Hood, Texas, where they were training. Part of their training was tailored for troops deploying to Kuwait. The company left Hilo for Texas in late August.
About 60 percent of the unit has been to the Middle East before.
They were part of Company C when it deployed to Iraq for a year beginning in August 2007.
