The founder of a program that feeds the homeless and the hungry has lost her battle with cancer.
Sharon Black, 52, died yesterday at Hospice Hawaii in Kailua.
She was surrounded by family and friends and her three dogs.
Black created the Kau Kau wagon which has fed thousands over the years.
She also grabbed headlines more than 15 years ago when she filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the city while working as a civilian outreach worker with the Honolulu Police Department. She eventually reached a settlement for $612,000.
In 2007, she filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city alleging sexual harassment and retaliation, saying she was experiencing health problems because of stress.
June 2011, she suffered a ruptured ulcer and that’s when doctors discovered the cancer. It spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones.
Black’s last wish was to find a home for her three great danes. A Big Island couple from Waimea is going to care for all three dogs. Black got more than 400 emails and phone calls from all around the world, but this couple a was perfect match.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
