Homeless shelter offers paid work on farm

A new homeless shelter on the Waianae coast will give people both a place to live and work.

The Cedar Church Waianae Valley Farm will soon house about 31 homeless people.

Those staying at the shelter will have to work four hours a day farming the four acre lot, and will be paid $8 an hour.

"Out there so many people no hope so many people they don’t know what to do but we want to give them their life and we want to give them hope." said Sookie Haymes, Cedar Church Waianae Valley Farm Manager.

"I think this is going to be a great blue print hopefully to replicate if we can prove this successful we can perhaps replicate this in other areas of oahu and go to the neighbor islands so I’m very excited about this first of its kind safe zone in Hawaii," said Rep. John Mizuno.

The shelter says it has already received several dozen inquiries from people interested in the program.
