Honolulu Zoo repaving project will limit parking in Waikiki

Monday was a special day for Summer Ahu and her baby, Makaela.

"This is our first trip to the zoo and I know that she isn’t really going to be aware of it, but it’s just for us to take pictures and this is the first time she is out," Ahu said.

Finding a stall at the Honolulu Zoo parking lot Monday morning took patience and luck.

"We looked in from outside and we are like ‘We are never going to get some parking,’" Ahu said.

Luckily, they found a spot.

It will become more difficult on Tuesday as the City begins the first phase of a repaving project that will shut down at least half of the parking lot until June.

Officials say the main reason why the work will take so long is that crews have to work around and preserve the many trees that surround the lot.

Alternate parking will be available at the Waikiki Shell and meters spots on Kapahulu and Monsarrat Avenues. With more than 250 stalls being taken away, visitors will have a tough time enjoying the wildlife.

"And it’s going to be worse for us. We need these places because street parking is dangerous to bring her out of the car," Ahu said.
