Honolulu Zoo seeks accreditation from international group

The Honolulu zoo continues to be a world-class facility.

The zoo’s accreditation has been renewed, which means the facility has achieved high standards for animal care, education and wildlife conservation.

The zoo hired more staff, improved its elephant exhibit and addressed a termite issue to gain re-accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Officials are now hoping to get accredited by the World Zoo Association.

“Now that we have this accreditation I think becoming a member of WZA is going to be critical to establish ties with Southeast Asia, Japan, China, Australia and work with them with not only on conservation programs but also to bring many animals from that part of the world into our collection to benefit our community,” said Manuel Mollinedo, director of the Honolulu Zoo.

The Honolulu Zoo is up for re-accreditation in four years.
