Housing project gets a long awaited makeover

After more than 50 years the Palolo Valley Homes is set to  get a remodel. The residents are happy the long wait is over.

Dalphne Misa has called Palolo Valley Homes her home for a long time.

"Actually to tell you the truth I‘ve been here for over 40 years so I live here all my life," said Misa.

So she has seen the community grow and come together and now she can’t wait for her home to be remodeled.

"If anything I lived here in my childhood also and now I am looking forward to my children, so if anything before I leave I want a stable place for our keiki today to live in," Misa explained.

The Hawaii Public Housing Authority broke ground this morning on a $11.1 million renovation project that will remodel the 44 units in six buildings that make up the Palolo Valley homes.

"In renovating all these units making sure they are safe decent and sanitary making sure we bring in all the things these buildings didn’t have in the past," said Hakim Ouansafi, Public Housing Authority.

The units will all be A-D-A compliant and senior and keiki friendly.

All the planned changes were done with input from the residents and families will have to move around within the complex as the remodeling is done.

"If any things like these building where we are standing building there were 8 families here but if there is anything was all community the residents helping out each other helping us move from here to there," said Ouansafi.

The Palolo Valley Homes project is part of a larger $91.9 million project to modernize public housing in the state.

The Palolo Valley project is expected to be done in about 18 months.
