HPD investigating after cats shot in Kalihi

Honolulu police are investigating a case of animal cruelty in Kalihi after several cats were found shot, and three of them were killed.

The cats were shot on different dates, but usually on Sunday nights into Monday mornings.

There are three feral cat colonies that live below Puahala Homes and near the Hawaii Public Housing Authority’s offices in Kalihi.

About 30 cats and kittens in all.

Over the past couple of months, three of the cats were found fatally shot in the head.

Necropsies reveal the cats were shot with pellet guns.

A few others, like this black cat, were also shot but survived.

The Liliha Neighborhood Board had the topic on its agenda Monday night.

"Apparently someone was shooting cats with a pellet gun and killing them."

Honolulu police are investigating the shootings.

"Residents and people in the area called us because cats were missing or dead. We made a police report and the case is being investigated. At this time we do not have any suspects but are focusing the attention of our officers on the area so hopefully we can do something about it," said Honolulu Police Major William Chur.

Recently the Cat Friends Organization started leasing a building adjacent to one of the HPHA offices, and has spayed or neutered most of the feral cats.

Those who’ve come to befriend the cats say they hope the person who’s been harming the cats will stop.

"This is the first time I’ve been aware of it happening in this neighborhood. It’s a criminal offense to be shooting cats and if we can identify the person we will take all the action we can against him," said Chur.

People in the area believe the same person was responsible for all the attacks based on ammunition used.
