HPD investigating growing number of scams on dating websites

Women looking for love are falling victim to scammers and losing tens of thousands of dollars.

Honolulu police say they’ve seen an increase in scams involving dating websites.

Scam artists spark a conversation with their victim and gain their trust.

One woman says she lost $34,000, sending money to a man who said he was a jeweler in Africa.

"They will say everything you want to hear,” said the victim.

"It’s hurt me financially hard by my pride hasn’t been hurt because I really wanna catch these people whoever they are,” she said.  “I know they’re out there. We’re gonna come after you."

HPD says one Hawaii victim lost $300,000.

“The one profile we can tell you is most of the suspects originate out of the United Kingdom and that’s not to say they’re in the United Kingdom they’re claiming to be in the United Kingdom that’s part of the profiles,” said Lt. John McCarthy of the Honolulu Police Department.

Bottom line — don’t disclose your personal information to people you meet on dating websites.

Victims are urged to contact police.
