A 13-year-veteran of the Honolulu Police Department is free on bail after making an appearance in court on federal charges in a marijuana growing operation.
Officer Michael Chu and Athena Lee had been in custody since being arrested Monday.
The operation was uncovered when a Fed Ex security manager intercepted a suspicious package sent from California to the Moana Pacific apartments on Kapiolani Boulevard.
It contained eight young marijuana plants.
Agents found 20 marijuana plants in the apartment and cash.
Another 10 to 20 plants were found in a Mililani home.
Officer Chu told agents he had a medical marijuana card.
Marijuana use is not tolerated at HPD.
Both Officer Chu and Lee were released on $25,000 unsecured bonds. Both must wear electronic monitoring devices and Lee must turn over her U.S. passport.
