A dispute on a barge in Kaneohe led to a man allegedly setting a woman on fire Monday.

The fight took place on a makeshift floating barge off Kamehameha Highway that neighbors say has been the source of repeated trouble including alleged drug dealing.

Police say an argument between a man and a woman aboard this barge led to the man allegedly setting the woman’s arm on fire.

An accelerant such as alcohol was allegedly thrown on her first. she was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to recover. Neighbors say they’re not surprised trouble happened on the barge.

"If you come down here like on Friday night, Saturday night, you’ll see cars pull up, guy runs out, sells him some drugs, car takes off,” said resident Jack Edie.  "I figured it would sooner or later, whenever you have drugs and alcohol and wild parties and all kinds of stuff going on you’re going to have violence."

The Department of Land and Natural Resources says it is not illegal to moor in the mudflats of Kaneohe Bay if the vessel is registered, but liveaboards are not allowed.

Police say the suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.

Six years ago, another of his barges was seized from the Heeia area of the bay and demolished; multiple criminal counts were associated with this same suspect in that case.
