Jailed drunk driver apparently hangs himself in holding cell

A 27-year old man apparently hanged himself with a T-shirt in a the Wahiawa police substation Saturday morning.

Police say the man was pulled over in a traffic stop at around 4 a.m., near the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Whitmore Avenue.

He was arrested for drunk driving, excessive speeding, and reckless driving, and was taken to the Wahiawa police substation.

Police found the man unresponsive in his cell at around 7 a.m.

"It happened in his particular cell by himself, but there were two other cells that also had inmates in there," said Deputy Chief Dave Kajihiro of HPD.

"It’s a very rare rare occasion. Of course, (it’s) an unfortunate situation."

The man was pronounced dead at Wahiawa General Hospital.

Police say he’s the husband of a Schofield-based soldier.

The City medical examiner has not released his name.
