Kanemitsu Bakery fails another health inspection

The future of Kanemitsu Bakery on Molokai is up in the air after the 75-year-old shop failed another health inspection today.

Owner George Kanemitsu was hoping to pass today’s inspection and reopen.

Instead, the State cited him for more health violations.

It’s been nearly three months since the doors of Kanemitsu Bakery closed. And no one knows if or when these doors will ever reopen.

"Really I was kind of disappointed because you know I thought everything would be passed," Kanemitsu said.

According to the health inspection report, the bakery corrected numerous items. Hot and cold water is available, and there are no roaches, rodents or evidence of vermin.

But Kanemitsu says the inspector found 13 new violations, including holes that may allow entry by vermin, and equipment that are not designed for durability.

"I really feel that whatever I do, is never going to be good enough. It’s always going to find, new violations. If that’s the case, we’ll never be opened up," he said.

In June, health officials received an anonymous complaint that insects and foreign substances were found in the bread rolls. A health inspector checked out the situation and did not find soap or towels at the hand washing sinks, but did discover what appeared to be an infestation of rodents.

Also, in March, the State slapped Kanemitsu’s with a $90,000 fine for selling goods while under a Health Department order, not to.

"How would you feel? You do the best you can, and say it doesn’t pass. And if it does pass, get another, always a new violations. It’s only going to waste my time and money," Kanemitsu said.

Since the bakery closed, Kanemitsu says he’s lost about $100,000 and had to lay off eight employees. He says he will spend the next few days, deciding whether to make changes to reopen, or to remain closed.

Kanemitsu’s includes a restaurant which is on a separate permit and has remained open.
