Throughout the coming weeks, officers will be increasing enforcement efforts across the island, checking for those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and other traffic violations.
“We want to encourage our motorists, particularly recent graduates and those who are on Kaua’i for the summer, to make smart choices while behind the wheel,” said Assistant Chief of the Patrol Services Bureau Ale Quibilan. “Our hope is that our traffic enforcement efforts will act as a deterrent for unsafe driving and prevent incidents before they occur.”
During the month of May, officers initiated 21 Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII) arrests and issued a total of 2,433 citations. Of those citations, 287 were for speeding, 192 for seatbelt violations and 164 for using a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle.
According to KPD, there were six fatalities on Kaua’i’s roadways in 2011 and three so far this year.
“Everyone can play a role in preventing traffic collisions,” adds Assistant Chief Quibilan. “Please drive safely and responsibly. It could save your life.”
