Kauai under flash flood watch through the night; flooding closes numerous roads

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch through late Sunday evening for the island of Kauai.

Officials say a trough west of the state will keep the atmosphere unstable over Kauai and Oahu. Conditions will be favorable for locally heavy
showers and possible thunderstorms over Kauai and Oahu overnight.

The heavy rain has caused numerous road closures and hazards.

Department of Public Works road crews removed boulders on Kahumoku Road in Lihu’e and Waha Road in Kalaheo Sunday afternoon.

A small sewage spill occurred in Ele’ele at the intersection of Kaumualii Highway and Ele’ele Road, and has since been contained.

Landslides and boulders were reported on Kalihiwai Road, Akemama Road in Lawa’i, Kahumoku Road in Lihu’e and Waha Road in Kalaheo. Department of Public Works crews have since cleared the roadways.

A power outage was also reported in Waimea, but has since been restored by Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative.
Keapana Bridge in Kapa’a was closed and has since been reopened.

Kuhi’o Highway, in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge, was closed, but has since been reopened and police officers are directing traffic at the scene.

In addition, the following roads are closed due to flooding as of the times noted:   
·         6:23 a.m. – Weliweli and Hapa roads and Ala Kino’iki in Kōloa
·         10 a.m. – Ho’one Road in Po’ipū is closed.
·         6:27 a.m. – Kekaha Road between Io Road and Kala Road in Kekaha
·         6:42 am – Waimea Road between Alawai Road and Big Save in Waimea
The roads listed below are experiencing flooding but are not closed:
·         Moi Road at the intersection of Kaumuali’i Highway in Hanapepe
·         Rice Street between Hardy Street and Ho’olako Street in Līhu’e
·         Halewili Road at the intersection of Kaumuali’i Highway in Kalaheo
·         Lanikai Road by Kintaro’s Restaurant in Kapa’a.

The roadways will be reopened when authorities deem they are safe for passage.

A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low lying areas.

Runoff from this storm may also cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain.
