Kauai: Visitors airlifted from Hanakoa Valley

KALALAU — Fire rescuers airlifted a visiting couple from Hanakoa Valley yesterday afternoon after a female reported having a heart condition that prohibited her from hiking back to the trail head.

She did not require medical attention.

Police Dispatch originally received a report of a group of 12 people who were stranded on the KalalauTrail near Hanakāpī’ai yesterday morning.  Rescuers from Engine 1 hiked into the area but did not locate anyone needing assistance.

Personnel from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) later located the group past Hanakāpī’ai, near the 8-mile landing zone in Hanakoa. DLNR called for assistance when it was reported that one female, age 47, had a heart condition and was unable to complete the hike.

Rescuers aboard Air-1 flew into the area around noon and transported the female and her partner back to the Kē’ē Beach landing zone.

The rest of the party hiked safely back to the trail head without assistance.
