Kihei vehicle fires believed to be intentionally set

Maui Fire officials say they believe several vehicle fires that happened overnight in Kihei were intentionally set.

The first fire happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday night on South Kihei Road. Officials say the fire started in the back of a white van in the parking lot of Paradise Gardens, and was put out by bystanders before firefighters got to the scene.

The second fire happened on Namauu Street, just before 1 a.m. Monday. Fire officials say a gold sedan was fully engulfed in flames in front of a home, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within about 30 minutes.

The final fire caused damage to two vehicles. It was reported just before 2:30 a.m. on Kaukahi Street. Fire officials say flames from a Jeep that caught fire in a parking lot also set fire to an SUV that was parked next to the Jeep.
