A total of 25 DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) personnel from the islands of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i and O‘ahu joined in today’s efforts, using one tender and one bulldozer.
“DLNR appreciates the strong support of the Kaua‘i Fire Department to combat this stubborn fire,” said Paul J. Conry, DLNR Interim First Deputy.
On Wednesday crews focused on mopping up and cold trailing fire edges. Firefighting efforts benefited from clouds and rain in the early afternoon.
Neighbor island crews from O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island will demobilize on Thursday afternoon, while Kaua‘i crews maintain a fire watch and start removing equipment.
County officials reopened Waimea Canyon Drive on Tuesday. Koke‘e Road remains closed until further notice.
Waimea Canyon and Koke‘e State Parks are open, and water service is being restored —
possible due to return of electric power last night. Portable toilets, provided yesterday, will be removed tomorrow. Camping within the Koke‘e Campsite will remain open, with portable toilets provided.
The Kaua‘i Department of Water continues to request that Kekaha residents limit water consumption to essential uses until power can be restored to a water storage tank that services the area.
