Laie families work together after rains flood their homes

In Laie, several families spent the day sweeping water out of their homes. In the tight knit community, neighbors acted fast helping each other out.

With the parking lot looking like a wading pool, the Polynesian Cultural Center was closed Friday. Laie residents nearby on Moana Street had to deal with about a foot of water just outside their homes.

Karen Thompson was woken up by thunder around 5 a.m., and the downpour followed shortly after that.

"It was just pouring down you know how it just, there’s no other way to say it, it’s just like somebody was dumping buckets," she says.

Water came in from the street and from her backyard, flooding her kitchen and living room, but neighbors were there to help, and they got there fast.

"We didn’t call anybody, they just come, we don’t have to call, they just come and check and see if we’re okay and they just come and provide help," Thompson says.

Carrie Sharp is just as grateful, after her children’s bedroom got drenched from the rushing water.

"The water was seeping in through the garage and we had about three inches in here but it’s drained down, well, somewhat drained," she says.

It’s become part of the drill here to check on their neighbors when there’s a potential for disaster. So when the storm drain gets clogged, even this man, who doesn’t even live on this street, is willing to dive in and unclog it.
