The State is taking another step forward on its master plan for the Diamond Head State Monument.
Work is underway on a new "linear park" on a 1.3 mile stretch of the exterior slopes.
The idea is to create pathways, picnic and rest areas, and landscaping on what is now barren land.
"Imagine 12 feet or six feet on each side of paved pathway fully landscaped and irrigated, landscaped with native Hawaiian plants," said William Aila, from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. "With all the traffic and all the safety concerns, jogging off the highway in this complete, safe, landscaped, beautiful path."
The project is expected to be complete in November.
