Laulima: Single mom battles cancer while caring for young sons with health problems of their own

Our health is one of the many blessings that we tend to take for granted.

Yet, health problems are one of the most common causes of distress among our Laulima families.

Today’s Laulima family has seen more medical problems and more hospital rooms than most people will see in a lifetime.

Two years ago, this single mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and told the cancer was making its way to her liver. While undergoing chemotherapy, she learned that she was pregnant with her third child.

Her son, her third boy, was born 9 months later. Her happiness was short-lived, however, as she soon learned that her newborn had developed epilepsy, and could experience chronic seizures.

With all of the health issues to manage on her own, keeping a job has proved difficult for this mom of three. She lost two jobs within a few months of each other after having to leave suddenly to care for her youngest child.

Just when mom thought life couldn’t get any harder, she learned that her eldest child, just nine years old, had developed a tumor and would need a bone marrow transplant.

A few months later, mom’s cancer had returned, this time in her brain. She is currently being treated for her brain condition while waiting for a liver transplant.

Other than a few dedicated friends, mom doesn’t have a "support system." The father of her children is not involved in their lives. And three years ago, both of her parents died within a month of each other from cancer.

Mom is currently trying to look for a job to support her family. In the meantime, they live in a homeless shelter .

Despite mom’s many challenges, her caseworker says:

Mom keeps a smile on her face and faith in her heart. Her life revolves around her boys and making sure they are happy and secure.

If you’d like to help this family, here is their wishlist:

Mom would appreciate a gas card and toiletries.

The two older boys, ages 4 and 9 could use clothes and shoes.

The baby, now 7 months old, could use clothes and diapers .

Let’s come together and make this a joyous holiday season for this family in need.

MAHALO: TJ Maxx is donating a $500 shopping spree to today’s Laulima family.
