Lava-sparked wildfire 50 percent contained

HONOLULU (AP) – National Park officials are continuing to battle a lava-sparked wildfire at Kilauea volcano that has burned more than 2,075 acres.

Park service Fire Education and Information Manager Gary Wuchner said Friday the Napau Fire is 50 percent contained. Crews have been able to halt the fire perimeter from going southward and some hot spots. Their main focus is the wildfire’s north side, which is threatening vegetation resources.

The blaze is about seven miles southeast of the Kilauea Visitor Center on the volcano’s east rift.

Lava from the Kamoamoa fissure eruption sparked the fire on the east rift of Kilauea on March 13.
