Letter: Push to rename ship akin to stolen valor

The editorial cartoon on Aug. 25 shows the new warship “USS Bone Spurs.” It is a most appropriate depiction of a president stealing the name of a war hero from the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. An aircraft carrier is intended to be named the USS Doris Miller to honor the heroism of a Black sailor who had no training as a machine gunner, but shot down several enemy aircraft while helping to save other wounded sailors. Miller died two years later during another conflict.
