Lightning Storms across Oahu cause trouble for residents

It was a close call for one Mililani family.

" First the thunder then this loud explosion the house rattled… something blew off the walls," said Mililani resident David Shimabukuro.

A direct hit to the roof, into some copper tubing leading to the laundry room…Where a small fire broke out…To say Shimabukuro was shocked would be an understatement

"At the same time we were very fortunate nobody got hurt and no further damage could have been a lot worse let’s say we had a big fire the house could have been destroyed."

On Kipapa Drive Friday morning, excitement as well.

"Around 9:30 when me and my brothers were home I was listening to my i-pod and watching the weather get really worse. And all of a sudden I see this lightning bolt come down and hit our tree. It made a loud bang and I saw the tree start creaking over and falling," said Josiah Tania.

Honolulu Firefighters had to be called in to remove the downed branches…

Josiah says it was like watching fireworks.

"It was like a loud bottle rocket just hitting it, loud,."

And the lightning show left many in the dark…At the peak there were nearly 85-hundred residents left without power from Waipahu to Pearl City, Hawaiian Electric officials believe lightning was to blame for the outages.
