Local bakers hit the kitchen in Food Network’s "Cupcake Wars"

Local bakery Hokulani Bake Shop will be featured on the Food Network this Sunday for an episode of "Cupcake Wars."

General Manager Angela Chandler says, "We’re goofy basically, is what it boils down to, and I really think that’s what they were looking for, something that’s different."

It was enough to get the Food Network to fly them both to California and compete in the show. Cupcake Wars pits four bakers who battle three rounds eliminating each other in every round. And they’re forced to use some unusual ingredients, like seaweed, capers and sausage.

In the final round, each team has two hours to make a thousand cupcakes and put it on display. That’s when stress usually rears its ugly head.

"There’s gonna be a moment where certain looks are exchanged to each other and that’s where you can tell we had a little bit of a rough spot, tiny rough spot," said Lead Baker Nicole Ferriman.

The winner gets $10,000. But Ferriman and Chandler aren’t allowed to say how they did. They did say it was an amazing experience, and in this case, reality TV was pretty real.

"The stress is real stress, the ready to cry, we’re ready to cry that’s genuine," Ferriman said.

They remain good friends, so everything must have turned out okay. They say the experience also made them even better at what they do, and they’re hoping island viewers will be proud.

"Win or lose, we’re here, we got good cupcakes, and we helped represent and bring Hokulani and Hawaii to the map," Chandler said.

Cupcake Wars plays at 6 p.m. Sunday on Oceanic Digital Channel 321 (Food Network). On Food Network HD, Channel 1321 it’s at 3 p.m.
