A local girl’s star continues to shine from the Disney stage.
The Wahiawa native, who has performed on and off broadway, is setting her sights on a new role.
You may recognize her as the fun loving, energetic neighbor Nina from Disney’s Imagination Movers but Wendy Calio is truly a local girl at heart.
"They were actually looking for a Latina girl age 18+ to play 16 and I was like 29 and I was are you sure about this my agent said just go," Wendy says.
The Mililani High School graduate had once dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina, but after dancing professionally on the mainland and on broadway she eventually fell in love with performing on television.
"My character is neighbor Nina she is the neighbor to four wacky crazy problem solving musicians," she says.
After three seasons with the group, the show has stopped filming in New Orleans and just wrapped up a 60 city tour this past spring.
"Being on TV is sometimes exhausting, you know the hours are crazy and on our last tour we traveled so much every night on a bus for eight hours," she says.
Now back home, Wendy is hoping to continue working at her dance studio in central Oahu and has plans to take on a new role.
"Being that I am on the other side of 30, I think I do want to work on having a family and just settling and you know running my business," she says.
But before that Imagination Movers will perform live at the Blaisdell and on Maui this October and to anyone interested in getting into the performing arts biz.
"The sooner you start the sooner you get to where you want to be," she says.
