MADD candlelight vigil honors those killed by a drunk driver

It’s always hard losing a loved one especially if the death was caused by a drunk driver.

Sunday night Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hawaii held its annual candlelight vigil.

The vigil honored and remembered the lives of loved ones killed in drunk driving crashes.

"We usually have it in December during the holiday season because that’s the hardest time for our families," said Sheri Sagayaga. "One of the hard parts of explaining to every family is that it’s going to take time to heal, time to work with each other, patience to work with each other."

Last year in Hawaii, 38 out of 109 crashes or about a third involved a drunk driver.

And in 2009, 43 out of 99 crashes or about 43-percent involved a drunk driver.

MADD urges everyone to drive responsibly especially during this holiday season.
