Overall, the nation averaged three stars but hawaii received a four star rating for its efforts in reducing drunk driving.
The state was rated nationally on specific criteria including the installation of the ignition interlock, enhancing penalties for those who drive drunk with children in their car and license revocation.
Since ignition interlock went into effect in january of this year, 9-hundred- 20 interlocks were installed.
"3,192 times over the past 10 1/2 months an interlock device has prevented a person with a blood alcohol level over 0.02 from starting his her vehicle," says Carol McNamee, MADD Hawaii founder.
Under the law, arrested dui offenders can only continue to drive if they use an in-car breathalyzer.
