Manslaughter case opened after death of elderly man at care home

Big Island police have opened a manslaughter case in connection with the death of an 82-year-old man at a care home in Kailua-Kona.

On August 13, police say officers went to the care home on Haokuni Street after the man was found unresponsive.

The man, identified by police as Oscar Ramos, was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Policec say an autopsy later determined that Ramos died after choking on his food.

Following the incident police say the Department of Human Services revoked the caregiver’s care home certification.
