Marine with Hawaii ties gets ready to receive nation’s highest medal

A marine who was stationed at Kaneohe will receive the nation’s highest award at the White House on September 15.

23 year-old Dakota Meyer will be the first living marine to receive the medal of honor for his actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2009, Meyer pulled four fallen comrades away from enemy forces during a firefight in Afghanistan.

"The price that was paid for that it’s not for me, if it was for me I might use it, but it’s not for me, it’s for the guys that died and their families and for the people fighting you know," said Meyer.

Meyer is no-longer in the corps.

Senator Dan Inouye, who is also a medal of honor recipient said, " I know what it is to fight for your brothers and Sgt. Meyer’s actions in Afghanistan in defense of his fellow marines are deserving of this high honor."
