Matson to raise Hawaii shipping fuel surcharge

HONOLULU (AP) – Citing recent high fuel prices, a major shippingcompany that carries goods to the Pacific is raising its fuel surcharges by four percentage points for its service in Hawaii.

Matson Navigation Company said Wednesday the surcharge is to rise from 43.5 percent to 47.5 percent for Hawaii service.

The surcharge for services in Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Micronesia is to rise from 45 to 49 percent.

Matson previously announced increased surcharges on March 31.

Senior vice president Dave Hoppes says fuel prices continued to rise since then.

The latest increase is to take effect June 12.

The company touts itself as providing a lifeline to the islands, which depend on shipments of goods ranging from food to clothes to automobiles.
