Maui Invitational multi-year ESPN deal

Chaminade University has reached a multi-year agreement with ESPN to continue televising the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Hosted on the ESPN networks. The agreement guarantees that all 12 Championship Round games will be televised live. ESPN has been the TV partner of the nation’s premier early-season college basketball tournament since 1991.

"ESPN is an outstanding partner, and we look forward to continuing to work with them," said Tom Valdiserri, Senior Vice President of sports marketing firm KemperLesnik. "For over 20 years, the Tournament and ESPN have grown together to deliver three days of great college basketball games featuring the best programs and the best coaches in the county. It was only natural to continue our relationship."

"The EA SPORTS Maui Invitational is a valued staple in our early-season college basketball coverage both for its high-quality matchups and exciting play," said Nick Dawson, ESPN director programming & acquisitions. "Plus, it ensures that our announce team of Jay Bilas, Sean McDonough and Bill Raftery will agree to work for us another year, so it’s really a win-win."

In 2011, the ESPN networks will combine once again to offer live television coverage of all 12 Championship Round games.  For the third straight year, every game will be produced in high definition on ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ESPNU HD, with the ESPN and ESPN2 games also streaming live on ESPN3. And for the first time, ESPN Radio will be on-site to broadcast the semifinals and championship game live.

The 28th annual EA SPORTS Maui Invitational will launch the college basketball season with a stellar field. The Championship Round includes Island Teams Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA and host Chaminade. Played fewer than 1,000 yards from the Pacific Ocean at Maui’s Lahaina Civic Center Nov. 21-23, four previous Maui champions, Duke (1992, 1997, 2001, 2007), Kansas (1996), Michigan (1985, 1988) and UCLA (2006), will return to the island in search of another Maui title and early-season bragging rights. All eight teams, including Division II Chaminade, participated in the 2011 NCAA® Tournament. The four newly-added Mainland Teams that participated in the Opening Games and Regional Games, part of the Tournament’s expansion, are Belmont, Middle Tennessee State, Towson and UNCG.
